Frequently Asked Questions

Web Design
How much does a website cost?

This can vary depending on how big the project is, and what features and functionality is included with the website. Once we know exactly what the client is wanting, we can give a rough estimate on the cost based on our hourly rate.

Do I need to organise my own domain name and web hosting?

No, we can provide you with hosting on Australian based servers and we can also take care of registering your domain name.

If you prefer to use your own services outside of JC Web Design, you can. However, free services such as CMS updates, security checks and automated backups will not be included if your web design project is not packaged with one of our selected hosting plans.

What is a Content Management System (CMS)?

A Content Management System is a tool that allows you to maintain the pages of your website yourself, without the need for any technical skills.

A CMS allows you to edit and add pages, images, products or blog entries to your website. No additional software is required. All you need is a compatible web browser and an internet connection.

Through lots of research, trail and error, our CMS of choice is ProcessWire.

Why choose ProcessWire?

Do you provide training in how to add content to a website (using a CMS)?

After the web project is complete, if required, a screencast of how to add and modify content is given.

If extra hands on training is required, this will be charged at an additional cost.

Will my website work on mobile devices?

Yes it will.

All the websites we design work on all different screen resolutions. We can design and develop your site using a responsive design so that the site is optimised for any device.

Does JC Web Design outsource their work?

No. All our work is done in-house.

Because all design and coding aspects are done by JC Web Design, it eliminates any double handling and speeds up the build process. This also makes any future updates or tweaks to your website quick and easy, while keeping the look and the feel of your website consistent.

Web Hosting
What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a service that allows your website to be viewed on the Internet. It’s basically a computer housed in a data centre that is configured to run your website and optional email.

Where are the web servers hosted?

These are hosted within Australia (Melbourne/Sydney Data Centres), which means you and your local customers receive fast load times to your website.

Does JC Web Design offer website backups?

Yes. All hosting plans include regular scheduled backups. The account is backed up once per day (off-site) for up to a 30 day period, which is then verified weekly. Easy browse, restore or download via cPanel(Click-Restore), as well as the ability to restore website files, databases and emails.

If a restoration of a website is requested due to no fault of JC Web Design, a restoration fee will be incurred.

Can I host my email on this hosting service?

While you can host your email on our hosting plans we advise agianst it.

This is because of the following reasons:

  • Our hosting plans have space limits on them not suited to email hosting. While you can host email, you may find that the plan isn't sufficient enough to store all your emails. You could increase the hosting plan, but it would be cheaper to get business class email hosting from someone like Google or Microsoft.
  • Our email hosting provided through cPanel only comes with standard features. If you are requiring more business grade features, we recommend using a business grade provider like Google or Microsoft, which also come with usually come with online office suites.
  • If anything happens to the hosting environment, not only will your website go offline, but so will your email service. It's just best to separate these and have business grade email hosting for the peace of mind.
  • To keep our servers specs to the highest grade, usually every 2-3 years migrate your website to a faster server. This may require some downtime of the email service. If your email was hosted outside of this environment, you would have peace of mind knowing your email service will not be interupted.
Your hosting plans seem expensive compared to others, why is that?

This is due to bundling your website design and hosting together which includes the following benefits and site maintenance:

  • Monthly CMS Updates
  • Monthly Plugin/Module Updates
  • Regular Security Checks
  • Regular SEO Checks for JCWD2500 Plans and Above*
  • Fast Response Times (due to being hosted within Australia)
  • Regular Migrations to Newer Hosting Environments
  • Fast Knowledgeable Support
  • Regular Off-Site Backups

Signage Sites
What is a signage site?

Our signage site is a website which displays custom data to inform or advertise information to your customers. This is useful in schools, shops, sporting clubs, etc - the possibilities are endless.

How much does a signage site cost?

The signage site has a one-time site license fee of $2000 which includes 1 signage template (signage layout) and 3 screen locations (filtering data dependent on screen location) configured for that major version release.

If extra screens locations are required to be configured, an additional $250 per screen is charged. However, If the same content is going to be used on all screens, an unlimited amount of screens can be used.

If additional signage templates are required, an additional $750 per template is charged.

Small updates to the signage screen are free, however major updates to the signage site application will require a new site license.

How does the signage site work?

The signage site works like a website. If a client requires and website and signage system, there is tight integration between the two applications, so that there is no double handling of data.

For example, a digital signage system would have a separate application to manage digital signage systems and the website would use another system. This causes a lot of issues due to double handling of data as you would need to publish one piece of data to one system, and then the same information through to another system. By integrating the signage site system into the clients website, entering data only needs to be done once making for a more effiecient and manageble system.

What equipment is needed to run the signage site?

Any computer that can run a fairly recent internet browser and an internet connection is required to process the signage system.

A screen with a resolution of 1080p resolution or higher is suggested for the output.

We do not sell computers or screens but can suggest some units which would be perfect for the job. We also do not install or configure this equipment.
